Volkswagen XL1 Hybrid

Volkswagen XL1 Hybrid

Volkswagen recently made clear its commitment to becoming environmentally friendly, including VW hybrid and electric models. Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, in Wolfsburg, Germany, announced last month that the company would invest EUR 85.6 billion over the next five years, two-thirds of which will go towards more energy efficient vehicles and environmentally conscious production methods. In the Phoenix area, Volkswagen’s hybrid models are available at Chapman VW.

A portion of the investments will be made into property, manufacturing plants and equipment to meet increasing demands in a more environmentally responsible manner. VW will invest also to modernize and increase product range, focusing on SUV and light commercial lines. New and successor models for all vehicle classes will be designed with an eye toward hybrid and electric drives. Volkswagen has been focused on green technology for decades but has recently begun to place a greater level of urgency on environmental issues.

Earlier this year, VW unveiled its diesel hybrid XL1 at the Qatar motor show. The XL1, informally known as the company’s “1 litre car,” is capable of achieving 300 mpg. With a base price of about $60,000, the XL1 s powered by an 800cc twin-cylinder turbo diesel engine paired with a lithium-ion electric motor. The batteries are charged by a standard electrical connection and the vehicle is capable of traveling 22 miles on electric power only. Although it can clock 0-60 in only 11.9 seconds, it emits an exceptionally low level of CO2. This is accomplished thanks to the vehicle’s exceptionally light weight (just over 1700 pounds). The car’s body is composed of a magnesium alloy subframe covered with a carbon fiber skin. Although only 250 XL1s are to be constructed originally, Volkswagen views this as an indicator of things to come.

In a recent media interview, Heinz-Jakob Neusser, VW board member and head of Group powertrain development, expressed the belief that plug-in hybrid vehicles are not the endgame to environmentally conscious vehicles but rather a “bridging technology.” The ultimate goal for VW is to be the world leader in vehicle electrification by 2020. It will be up to individual countries to bring up their infrastructure to support this inevitable direction.

While we wait for the amazing models to come, VW already offers a robust fleet of environmentally friendly vehicles. Currently, VW offers the 2015 Jetta hybrid, offering 48 mpg on the highway but still offering a turbocharged driving experience. The eGolf, Golf GTE, Passat GTE and class-leading Volkswagen Jetta TDI hybrid vehicles are available locally at Chapman VW Scottsdale.
