2015 VW Golf, Motor Trend's Car of the Year for 2015

2015 VW Golf, Motor Trend’s Car of the Year for 2015

The VW Golf models, including the 2015 Volkswagen Golf and 2015 Golf GTI, have been named Motor Trend’s Car of the Year, in a nearly unanimous judges’ vote. With its triple threat of exterior style, interior amenities and unparalleled performance, it’s no surprise to VW fans. In Scottsdale and the Phoenix area, you can find this year’s hottest ride at Chapman Volkswagen.

Newly updated, the seventh generation Golf beat out such venerable competitors as the BMW 2 Series, the Honda Fit, Hyundai Genesis, Lexus RC, Mercedes S-Class and the 2015 Ford Mustang. In all, Motor Trend evaluated 23 different vehicles in six individual categories. Categories include appearance, efficiency, acceleration, interior amenities and two behind-the-wheel tests conducted on the track and under normal roadway conditions.

The Car of the Year award, in its 66th year, recognizes the best new or radically redesigned car for the model year. The first COTY award, then awarded to a manufacturer rather than a specific model, went to the 1949 Cadillac V8 engine cars. Motor Trend also awards a Truck of the Year and an SUV of the Year. This prestigious award is memorialized with the “Golden Calipers” trophy.

The Golf’s design was deemed by the judges to be sleek and sporty, with no superfluous lines or gimmicky details, making it visually appealing to both young consumers and those with a more mature outlook. The impressive interior was noted for its touchscreen display, outstanding instrumentation, classic and luxurious trim and great seats.

The line was similarly praised by judges for its efficiency. The Golf’s outstanding fuel economy was lauded but Motor Trend really appreciated the electric and diesel versions of the model, especially because neither version made the judges feel like performance or fun had been sacrificed for economy. In fact, the judges commented that it was difficult for them to distinguish the e-Golf from the combustion-powered versions of the model line.

But, ultimately, it was in the category of engineering excellence that the Golf line truly shone brightest. The judges attributed their accolades in great part to the new Volkswagen MQB modular front engine and front wheel drive architecture. This revolutionary set-up takes almost 200 pounds off the overall curb weight, allowing for a roomier body, more cargo space, and more head-and leg room.

High praise from Motor Trend’s review: “No matter which Golf variant we jumped into, we emerged with smiles on our faces. And while each obviously catered to different priorities, they all share the same solid build quality, taut structure, and remarkable ride that make them feel like a premium vehicle in an entry-level segment.”

If you would like to experience the COTY in person, you can find the entire Volkswagen Golf line at Chapman VW, serving Phoenix, Scottsdale and the surrounding areas.
